Toshiba's Smart Gate Drive (SGD) coupler series, TLP5214A/TLP5214/TLP5212/TLP5222, is designed to meet these needs. These couplers not only have VCE(sat) detection function, Miller clamp function and FAULT output function, but also adopt 16-pin SO16L package to meet the needs of versatility, providing comprehensive protection for insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) in inverters from overcurrent damage.
1. Product Features and Functions
The TLP5214A/TLP5214/TLP5212/TLP5222 series couplers provide comprehensive protection for IGBTs in inverter applications with their smart gate drive technology. The overcurrent protection function of these couplers can continuously monitor the drain-source voltage (VDS) or collector-emitter voltage (VCE) of the power device, and perform soft shutdown when the VDS or VCE rise caused by overcurrent is detected, thereby protecting the power device from damage.
Particularly noteworthy is the TLP5222 model, which has a built-in protection operation automatic recovery function, which can reset the optocoupler to normal working state within 25.5μs (typical value) after the protection operation is triggered, greatly simplifying the sequence setting in the controller. In addition, these couplers also integrate an isolated fault state feedback function, which can send a fault signal to the controller when an overcurrent is detected, improving the response speed and reliability of the system.
The SO16L package used by the TLP5222 ensures a creepage distance and electrical clearance of 8mm (minimum), making it suitable for equipment requiring higher insulation performance. At the same time, its rated operating temperature range is -40℃ to 110℃, making it suitable for various applications in harsh temperature environments, such as photovoltaic power generation systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
2. Overcurrent protection
Overcurrent protection is a critical mechanism in power electronic equipment that detects abnormal current flow in the circuit and prevents circuit damage. The causes of overcurrent may include output short circuit and arm short circuit. The TLP5214A/TLP5214/TLP5212/TLP5222 series couplers provide overcurrent protection through VCE(sat) monitoring and other methods to ensure safe operation of the circuit. As shown in Figure 1.1 (a) and Figure 1.1 (b)

3. Functional description of SGD coupler
The SGD coupler monitors the collector-emitter voltage (VCE) of the IGBT and operates through a two-stage protection sequence in the case of overcurrent: first, soft-close VOUT to prevent the IGBT from being damaged by overcurrent, and then transmits a fault signal to the controller. This protection mechanism has two reset methods, LED triggering and automatic reset, providing users with flexible operation options.
In normal operation, the turning off and on of the LED signal affects the state of the DESAT pin and the FAULT output. In addition, the SGD coupler has a built-in active Miller clamp function that connects the gate-emitter of the IGBT, which can clamp the gate without external components, which helps prevent short circuits in the upper and lower arm power devices, simplifies the design, and reduces the need for external circuits. As shown in Figure 1.2 (a), Figure 1.2 (b), and Figure 1.2 (c)

4. Applications
The TLP5214A/TLP5214/TLP5212/TLP5222 series couplers are suitable for a variety of applications that require inverters, including industrial inverters, photovoltaic inverters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), battery management systems (BMS), etc. The high performance and versatility of these couplers make them indispensable components in these applications.
